Kids Computer Lesson 1

This computer lesson is designed to teach children some of the basics of Windows. With a parent's help they will learn how to open programs, save files, create folders and move files.

Your child should know how to point and click the mouse before beginning this lesson.

Show your child how to start a program. We will open the Calculator first. From the Start menu -- All Programs -- Accessories -- Calculator. You should have a new calculator window. You can check today's math work!

Now, have them open the Paint program. Start -- All Programs -- Accessories -- Paint. Your child should have a new window open that says "untitled - Paint" at the top of it.

Let them play with the tools on the left and colors on the bottom until they have a picture they like.

Show your child the x, square and dash in the upper right of their paint window. Explain that the x closes the window - don't click that one! Have them click on the square to maximize their window and click on it again to make it small again. Have them click on the dash. Show them the taskbar, and how you can click on the window you want to bring back up.

Now, From the File menu, have your child click on Save As... Have them save the file on the Desktop. Next, show them how they can close the Paint program by clicking on Exit from the File menu, or clicking on the red x in the top right corner.

Show your child their paint file on the desktop. Explain what the desktop is. Have them point their mouse to somewhere empty on the desktop. They can right click the mouse, then click on New then on Folder. Find the New Folder, and right click on it, then click on Rename. Rename it to your child's name. Explain that a folder on the computer is similar to a paper folder. You can store things inside your folders to organize them.

Next, have your child drag and drop their paint file to their new folder. Then they can double click their new folder to open it. Then double click their paint file to re-open it.
