Kids Computer Lesson 2

This computer lesson is designed to teach children some of the basics of word processing. With a parent's help they will learn how to change fonts, colors, and insert images.

Your child should finish Lesson 1 prior to doing this lesson. If they don't already know how to type, Typing Instructor for Kids is a fun way to learn.

For this lesson, we will use WordPad. This is found on most Windows computers. If you have a different word processor, just modify the instructions to fit your program.

Open WordPad. From the Start Menu -- All Programs -- Accessories -- WordPad. Let your child type in something.

Now, let's change the font. Have the child select all of the text. There are several ways to do this. The easiest two are to hit the control key and the letter A key at the same time, or Choose Select All from the Edit menu. These commands are helpful to learn because they are standard throughout most Windows programs. Now, they can choose a font. Above where you type in WordPad, there is a drop down box that has all of the different font choices. Let child experiment until they find one that they like. They can also change the font size with the next drop down box.

Show them how to use the mouse to select just a few words. Then they can click on the Bold, Italic and Underline buttons to see what they do. Select different words for each of these buttons. Show them how you can click the button again to undo the text change.

Next, let them select another word using the mouse. Then they can click on the Color button, which looks like an artist's palette. Let them choose a color for their text.

Have them select an put their cursor somewhere, then have them click then center align button. Do the same with the align right and align left buttons.

Next, let's insert the image they created in the previous lesson. Have them click on the Insert menu at the top, and then choose object. Choose 'create from file' on the left. Then help them browse to find their file. Remember, it was on the desktop inside the folder they created. Then click ok. Their image should appear inside their document.

Show them how to save their document inside their folder.
