The American Flag Mini Unit Study

Library List:
A biography about Betsy Ross
A book on the American flag: We used: Red, White, and Blue The Story of the American Flag by John Hermann.

History/Social Studies/Geography:
Read the Betsy Ross biography. Do the Betsy Ross fill in the blank sheet.
Read the book on the American flag. Discuss the significance of the number of stars and stripes.
Betsy Ross had her upholstery shop in Philadelphia on Arch Street. Find this on a map.
Recite and discuss the Pledge of Allegiance.
Draw picture of the American flag as it has changed through history.

Bible:
Read Number 2:2 from your Bible. They used banners in Biblical times.
Make your own family banner or flag. Use butcher paper to make a large rectangle. In the center, put your family name or a symbol. Let each child draw a picture of what they think is important to your family around the edges.

Music:
Sing the Star Spangled Banner, which was written by Francis Scott Key after watching the British attack Fort McHenry, Maryland, in 1814, during the War of 1812. Discuss what the song means and its origin. You could also research what the war of 1812 was about and who won.

Sewing:
Sew a flag.
